The safest way to prevent getting HPV is to NOT have sexual contact. Using condoms every time you have sex gives you some protection, but condoms aren't perfect. Condoms don't cover parts of a guy's genital area which can become infected with the HPV. It just takes skin-to-skin contact to get the virus. Taking a shower doesn't wash away the virus, and birth control pills don't protect you either.
