Pertussis is a bacterial infection that is spread when you come in close contact with an infected person. When the person coughs, tiny droplets that you usually can't see go into the air and are breathed in by someone who is standing close by. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. The bacteria that causes Pertussis is called Bordetella pertussis and it is still a threat to anyone who has not been vaccinated. People living in close quarters, such as students living in dorms or overnight camps are especially at risk for getting Pertussis.
