Research at the Center for Young Women's Health
The Center for Young Women's Health participates in research on eating disorders and bone health, osteoporosis, STD interventions, medical education, dating violence, nutrition and fitness, obesity and eating disorders prevention, Pap tests, HIV, media, and menstrual disorders including polycystic ovary syndrome.
Gynecologic problems among adolescent girls are often overlooked. Conditions such polycystic ovary syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease, and abnormal Pap tests occur not only during adulthood, but also during adolescence. Early diagnosis and treatment during the teen years can prevent problems during adolescence, and also prevent costly adult health issues such as infertility. Adolescents have high rates of unintended pregnancy and STDs, and research is urgently needed to find new interventions that can help girls build a healthy future. Many diseases that are thought of as adult conditions, such as endometriosis and osteoporosis, have recognizable onsets in adolescence, when early treatment is possible.
